Unforgettable Weekend Fly Fishing at Gaston’s: 33 Browns and Countless Memories

Unforgettable Weekend Fly Fishing at Gaston’s: 33 Browns and Countless Memories

Sunday morning began with a quick fly fishing trip, departing Gaston’s ramp at 9 AM with Michael and Mikayla. Michael achieved a new personal best, catching a 20-inch brown trout on a Sunday Special fly. The water flow was around 2 units. We motored up behind Newlands Resort for a few drifts before switching gears to catch some sculpins for an upcoming bait trip in the afternoon and the next day.

In the afternoon, Glenn and Johnny joined us at Gaston’s. We motored up to the bottom of Bull Shoals State Park and started a long drift down, targeting active browns. The action kicked off at Cane Island, where we fished for about three hours, catching 12 browns ranging from 16 to 21 inches. We wrapped up just before dark.

The next morning, Karen and Rebecca joined us, buoyed by the previous evening’s success. We returned to Cane Island, and it didn’t disappoint. With minimal flow (7 MW) and low boat traffic, we managed to catch and release 14 more browns by noon. After lunch, the guys rejoined us, and despite the continued minimal flow, they managed to catch 7 more browns.

Over the two days, we caught a total of 33 browns, all between 16 and 22 inches. It was a wonderful trip with the group, leaving everyone with plenty of pictures and memories to take home.
