Fly fishing at night on Lake Taneycomo, unfortunately we no longer offer guided trips on Lake Taneycomo, just outside of Branson, Missouri is a very popular activity because nighttime is when the generators at Table Rock Dam are often shut down, so conditions are perfect for White River fly fishermen who prefer to wade fish.
If you would like to try out a night time experience, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the results. If you’re worried about structure in the water when walking in the dark, I don’t think it’s that big a problem if you wade in a familiar area. For the most part, up at the dam the river bottom is fine pebble and the water is pretty much wadeable all the way across for the first mile or so.
The key to fishing at night is to cover a lot of water and search for big fish. Throwing several different patterns can result in that big, “lifetime” trout you have been searching for. I really believe Taney has some of the best night time fishing for big browns in the country. And when the brown run starts in the fall, you will not want to miss out on that.

Night time fly fishing can offer up some of the best fly fishing for big trout you will ever find. The bites can be explosive and if you’re not ready for it, you may get the rod yanked right out of your hand.
You never know what might be on the end of your line. Locals say “the big ones bite at night” and that’s no joke. The most difficult aspect of fly fishing at night is casting. You definitely need to feel comfortable with line control and if you’re not, night fishing will shorten the learning curve.
This is why fishing in the dark makes a cast improve dramatically… your sense of feel will grow quickly.
The night bite on the White River is an experience that can be like no other. Night fishing trips are usually 4-6 hour trips for 1 or 2 anglers and are ran in our Stealthcraft Drift Boats.
The typical outfits are 7 and 8 weight 9 to 10 foot fly rods equipped with floating line. We try to aim for lower flows working articulated streamers fishing slightly below the surface; as well as, mouse patterns in articulated and single hook patterns when targeting fish on the surface.
