Memorable Fly Fishing Days with Tim and Zac: Caddis Hatch Success

The past couple of days, I had the pleasure of fishing with Tim and his buddy Zac. They had been in touch with me for a few months, eager to schedule a trip during the peak of the Caddis hatch. This year’s hatch has been somewhat unpredictable due to fluctuating water temperatures and flows, but we noticed a significant increase in activity over the past week.

We decided to start our fishing trips at 10:00 AM and continue until 6:00 PM to maximize our chances of enjoying some dry fly action. Our timing was perfect, and the Caddis hatch did not disappoint. Tim, being an experienced fly fisherman, successfully boated several fish, including a few impressive browns, using a size 18 Elk Hair Caddis. Zac, initially observing and learning the techniques, quickly picked up the process.

Once Zac felt confident, we transitioned him from using Sunday Specials under an indicator to a tandem Elk Hair Caddis setup. This change paid off as Zac caught his first fish ever, which was also his first cutthroat trout on a dry fly. This experience has now hooked Zac on dry fly fishing for good. The combination of ideal fishing conditions and successful catches made these days truly memorable for everyone involved.
