Start the thread at the front and wind back to the bend. It’s important to have a thread base so the foam doesn’t shift from side to side.
[dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover dnxtiep_uih_image=”https://flysandguides.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Chernobyl-Hopper-step-2-square.jpg” dnxtiep_uih_bg_overlay=”rgba(0,0,0,0)” dnxtiep_uih_image_opacity=”1 ” _builder_version=”4.6.5″ _module_preset=”default” hover_text_fonts_text_color=”#ffffff” hover_text_fonts_font_size=”36px” hover_enabled=”0″ border_width_all=”1px” border_color_all=”#ffffff” box_shadow_style=”preset1″ box_shadow_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.3)” dnxtiep_uih_image_hover_effect=”effect-18″][/dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover]
Now I don’t show how to glue the foam pieces together, but it’s real simple. To apply multiple colors and actually make the cut with premade shaped blades for whatever body your trying to make you’ll need to use razor foam or 1mm. And nothing bigger or it will be impossible to have a lot of colors for the body. Measure the body according to the hook size your using. Tie it in where you leave ¼ inch hanging off the back. You can go longer if you like, it’s really up to you. Also when tying it in make sure your wraps are on top of each other and not side by side. After firmly tying it in, you can add a drop of zap-a-gap on the underside (where the thread wraps are).
[dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover dnxtiep_uih_image=”https://flysandguides.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Chernobyl-Hopper-step-3-square.jpg” dnxtiep_uih_bg_overlay=”rgba(0,0,0,0)” dnxtiep_uih_image_opacity=”1 ” _builder_version=”4.6.5″ _module_preset=”default” hover_text_fonts_text_color=”#ffffff” hover_text_fonts_font_size=”36px” hover_enabled=”0″ border_width_all=”1px” border_color_all=”#ffffff” box_shadow_style=”preset1″ box_shadow_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.3)” dnxtiep_uih_image_hover_effect=”effect-18″][/dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover]
Now you’re ready for the legs. Fold them around the thread and tie them in.
[dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover dnxtiep_uih_image=”https://flysandguides.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Chernobyl-Hopper-step-4-square.jpg” dnxtiep_uih_bg_overlay=”rgba(0,0,0,0)” dnxtiep_uih_image_opacity=”1 ” _builder_version=”4.6.5″ _module_preset=”default” hover_text_fonts_text_color=”#ffffff” hover_text_fonts_font_size=”36px” hover_enabled=”0″ border_width_all=”1px” border_color_all=”#ffffff” box_shadow_style=”preset1″ box_shadow_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.3)” dnxtiep_uih_image_hover_effect=”effect-18″][/dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover]
Now gage the thread wraps to make the segmentations. You can have as many as you want, but I’m doing four total until I get up to the eye. In order to make wide spaces you’ll need to lift up the foam and wind forward until you get to the desired length you want.
[dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover dnxtiep_uih_image=”https://flysandguides.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Chernobyl-Hopper-step-5-square.jpg” dnxtiep_uih_bg_overlay=”rgba(0,0,0,0)” dnxtiep_uih_image_opacity=”1 ” _builder_version=”4.6.5″ _module_preset=”default” hover_text_fonts_text_color=”#ffffff” hover_text_fonts_font_size=”36px” hover_enabled=”0″ border_width_all=”1px” border_color_all=”#ffffff” box_shadow_style=”preset1″ box_shadow_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.3)” dnxtiep_uih_image_hover_effect=”effect-18″][/dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover]
The last segmentation you want to be back just a little from the eye of the hook.
[dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover dnxtiep_uih_image=”https://flysandguides.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Chernobyl-Hopper-step-6-square.jpg” dnxtiep_uih_bg_overlay=”rgba(0,0,0,0)” dnxtiep_uih_image_opacity=”1 ” _builder_version=”4.6.5″ _module_preset=”default” hover_text_fonts_text_color=”#ffffff” hover_text_fonts_font_size=”36px” hover_enabled=”0″ border_width_all=”1px” border_color_all=”#ffffff” box_shadow_style=”preset1″ box_shadow_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.3)” dnxtiep_uih_image_hover_effect=”effect-18″][/dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover]
Attach the next set of legs. Add a drop of zap-a-gap on the underside (where the thread wraps are)
[dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover dnxtiep_uih_image=”https://flysandguides.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Chernobyl-Hopper-step-7-square.jpg” dnxtiep_uih_bg_overlay=”rgba(0,0,0,0)” dnxtiep_uih_image_opacity=”1 ” _builder_version=”4.6.5″ _module_preset=”default” hover_text_fonts_text_color=”#ffffff” hover_text_fonts_font_size=”36px” hover_enabled=”0″ border_width_all=”1px” border_color_all=”#ffffff” box_shadow_style=”preset1″ box_shadow_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.3)” dnxtiep_uih_image_hover_effect=”effect-18″][/dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover]
Whip finish the fly and your done. Note: You can also tie this as a soft hackle. It works like a charm.
[dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover dnxtiep_uih_image=”https://flysandguides.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Chernobyl-Hopper-step-8-square.jpg” dnxtiep_uih_bg_overlay=”rgba(0,0,0,0)” dnxtiep_uih_image_opacity=”1 ” _builder_version=”4.6.5″ _module_preset=”default” hover_text_fonts_text_color=”#ffffff” hover_text_fonts_font_size=”36px” hover_enabled=”0″ border_width_all=”1px” border_color_all=”#ffffff” box_shadow_style=”preset1″ box_shadow_color=”rgba(255,255,255,0.3)” dnxtiep_uih_image_hover_effect=”effect-18″][/dnxtiep_ultimate_image_hover]
This next step is up to you, but after you tie in the legs you can add a piece of hi-vis for a post and it acts as a wing or an indicator for you to see if making long drifts.

Whip finish the fly and glue the eye.
