Challenging Conditions and Memorable Moments: A Week of Fishing on the White and Norfork Rivers

It seems like the fishing this week has been a mixed bag, much like last week. The hopes of hitting the peak caddis hatch didn’t quite pan out, but there were still some memorable moments. Starting the week with Shane and Paul from Oklahoma, we hoped for a stellar caddis hatch, but fluctuating water levels and rain made things tricky.

Monday’s trip to the Norfork with Jeremy was a wet one. The steady rain wasn’t ideal for the Cicada bite, so we stuck with a bobber rig. The best bite in my boat was a Carotene jig dropped off a miracle fly, but no big catches. We decided to return to the White River for better chances on the surface. Jeremy’s group from Utah managed a few browns on caddis dries, with the day’s highlight being the first brown on a Cicada this year. Shane landed a nice brown on top before we wrapped up the day.

Tuesday was slow, with a deep river strategy yielding only a few decent rainbows in the catch-and-release section. Wednesday, with Ken, we tried for dries in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the dropping water levels and a sudden storm cut our trip short, with only a few small rainbows to show for our efforts.

Thursday, I was out with Mel and Cathy. The day turned into a half-day due to storms and flight delays that had the group arriving at 2am Thursday morning. The water yo-yoed, dropping a foot while I was rigging rods and rising again before we finished. Despite the challenges, Cathy had a successful day, boating three browns on a blob fly with a red midge dropper.

The cicadas are getting louder, and I occasionally see them buzzing over the water. Any day now, we should see some explosive action as these bugs start falling. Until then, I’ll be dredging the bottom, hoping the browns stay interested in those caddis bugs!
